The US Justice Department along with 49 of the 50 state Attorney Generals have reached an agreement with 5 of the nation’s largest banks in the Robo-signing and Mortgage Service Fraud scandal of 2010.

In the $25 billiion dollar settlement, $5 billion is earmarked for $2000 payments to be distributed to homeowners who were illegally foreclosed on between Jan. 1, 2008 and Dec. 31, 2011. The addtioanl $20 billion will be used to help homeowners who are currently in financial distress and in danger of losing their homes.  Some of the alternatives available for these homeowners are loan modifications, principle reductions, refinancing, short sales, relocation assistance among others.
